Reviewed August 15, 2026. A useful “green hosting” evaluation goes beyond a badge or renewable percentage. Buyers need to know what service is delivered, where it runs, what energy and emissions boundaries are claimed, how evidence is assured, and whether reliability and exit requirements still work.
This guide does not rank providers or certify environmental claims. It provides a due-diligence structure for comparing like-for-like workloads with qualified sustainability, engineering, legal, and accounting review. Treat this as a decision and validation framework, not a promise that one product, provider, architecture, or policy fits every organization. Record assumptions, owners, dependencies, exceptions, stop conditions, and rollback before production change.

Standards currentness: As reviewed August 15, 2026, GHG Protocol states that its existing standards and guidance remain in effect until it communicates otherwise. Its July 29, 2026 standards update describes a harmonized Corporate Standard process and a planned second-quarter 2027 draft consultation; it is not evidence of a completed facility- or workload-specific result.
Define the hosting service before comparing claims
Record the application, users, transactions, storage, traffic, regions, availability, recovery, security, compliance, support, growth, and portability needs. Provider sustainability evidence must be mapped to the facilities and services actually available to that workload.
Distinguish provider-wide reporting from product, region, facility, tenant, and workload evidence. A corporate target or annual renewable procurement number may not describe the customer service boundary.
- Identify hosting model, region, tenancy, capacity, redundancy, support, and customer responsibilities.
- Request energy, emissions, water, hardware, and waste boundaries with methods and reporting periods.
- Review renewable instruments, allocation, certificate retirement, assurance, and exclusions.
- Confirm data export, configuration portability, contract exit, deletion, and transition support.
Score evidence quality and operating fit separately
A provider can have strong corporate reporting and still be a poor technical fit. Compare sustainability evidence alongside security, reliability, performance, support, compliance, cost, concentration, and portability.

Run a representative workload pilot
Measure performance, utilization, energy or emissions data availability, observability, support, backup, recovery, security, and cost using a defined functional unit such as transaction, request, user, or batch. Keep the baseline method identical across options.
Stop when evidence cannot be tied to the purchased service, environmental claims omit material boundaries, a lower-carbon option breaks recovery or compliance, or provider lock-in prevents a credible exit.
- Set service, security, recovery, cost, sustainability, and evidence requirements.
- Collect current provider architecture, environmental methodology, assurance, contracts, and incident evidence.
- Run a bounded pilot with identical workload boundary, test cases, functional unit, and measurement period.
- Review conflicts and gaps with engineering, sustainability, security, finance, legal, and business owners.
- Select, condition, defer, or reject with evidence, exceptions, refresh triggers, and an exit plan.
Monitor the provider after selection
Track workload efficiency, service performance, energy and emissions disclosures, water where material, provider incidents, support, control evidence, contract commitments, and portability tests. Reconcile reported improvements with methodology changes.
A provider switch can create migration emissions, engineering work, operational risk, and duplicate capacity. Include transition effects rather than claiming an immediate net benefit from procurement alone.
- Service: availability, latency, error, recovery, support, security findings, and customer effort.
- Efficiency: utilization, provisioned versus used resources, storage, transfer, and functional-unit trend.
- Environmental: boundary coverage, location/market results, water, hardware, assurance, and restatements.
- Commercial and exit: total cost, contract variance, concentration, export success, transition effort, and deletion evidence.
Implementation and review gate
Before selecting or promoting a provider, reviewers must validate like-for-like service scope, environmental boundaries and evidence, assurance, resilience, security, contract claims, representative pilot results, and exit readiness.
