Build the workload record
Name owners, users, information, applications, integrations, identity, network, performance, support, critical periods, licensing, cost, recovery, obligations, and technical debt. Compare retain, retire, replace, rehost, replatform, and redesign.
Prepare the operating foundation
- Identity, least privilege, emergency access, keys, and ownership.
- Configuration, patching, logging, monitoring, backup, and restoration.
- Budgets, tags, alerts, quotas, support, and provider escalation.
- Information governance, encryption, retention, exports, and deletion.
Pilot complete work
Test representative users, data, integrations, load, failure, security, support, restoration, and cost. Compare complete workflow outcomes with the baseline rather than treating migration or adoption as value.
Preserve portability and exit
Document formats, exports, identities, keys, dependencies, licenses, transition assistance, deletion evidence, contract rights, termination cost, and fallback. Test meaningful recovery and export before scaling.
Next step for your environment
Create a workload decision record with alternatives, controls, pilot evidence, economics, acceptance, rollback, and exit.
Record the accountable owner, baseline, source date, decision, exceptions, acceptance evidence, and review trigger. Test consequential changes in a bounded environment, maintain a rollback path, and verify the real result before closing the work. Product names, availability, pricing, legal requirements, and security guidance can change; recheck the primary sources whenever the decision is renewed or the environment changes.
Before approval, separate observed facts from assumptions, assign every unresolved gap, and preserve the evidence needed to reproduce the decision. Revisit the outcome after implementation so incomplete activity is not mistaken for durable improvement.
For every recommendation, record the affected service, responsible owner, prerequisites, supporting source, test method, failure threshold, exception, and acceptance decision. Confirm that operations, security, users, suppliers, and recovery remain supportable after the proposed change.
Keep the evidence auditable, dated, reproducible, and understandable to the accountable business and technical owners.
