A useful roadmap focuses limited resources on critical services, consequential exposure, resilience, support lifecycle, and measurable operating constraints.

- Know the services, information, assets, identities, and suppliers that matter.
- Address unsupported systems and consequential access first.

Map business services and constraints
Identify revenue and customer services, internal operations, owners, users, information, applications, devices, networks, suppliers, critical periods, manual workarounds, and recovery needs. Record recurring delays, unsupported technology, single points of knowledge, and known contractual obligations.
Prioritize foundational risk
- Strong authentication and removal of unnecessary privilege.
- Current inventory and support lifecycle.
- Internet-facing and known-exploited exposure.
- Secure configuration, patching, endpoint, email, and remote access.
- Protected backups and representative restore tests.
- Incident contacts, containment authority, communications, and supplier escalation.
Choose the operating model
Decide which strategy, application ownership, risk acceptance, and business knowledge stay internal; which repeatable operations can be managed; and which specialist work needs outside expertise. Define scope, access, evidence, continuity, total cost, and exit for every consequential supplier.
Sequence the roadmap
Rank actions by business impact, exposure, dependency, effort, and evidence confidence. Assign owner, target date, cost range, success evidence, exception path, and review trigger. Start with foundational inventory, identity, recovery, and support work that enables later improvements.

Record the accountable owner, baseline, source date, decision, exceptions, acceptance evidence, and review trigger. Test consequential changes in a bounded environment, maintain a rollback path, and verify the real result before closing the work. Product names, availability, pricing, legal requirements, and security guidance can change; recheck the primary sources whenever the decision is renewed or the environment changes.
