Use six migration gates for ownership, discovery, target controls, economics, pilot evidence, and rehearsed cutover with rollback.

Cloud migration tips are useful only when they become evidence gates. Before cutover, the organization should be able to show who owns the workload, what depends on it, how the target is controlled, what the full economics look like, and how failure will be reversed.

Gates one and two: ownership and discovery

Name business and technical owners, users, outcome, critical periods, risk acceptance, and budget. Inventory information, identity, integrations, DNS, certificates, networks, performance, support, licensing, recovery, data volume, and technical debt. Resolve unknowns before scheduling movement.

Gate three: target controls

  • Account structure, roles, MFA, least privilege, and emergency access.
  • Network, DNS, egress, segmentation, encryption, keys, and secrets.
  • Logging, monitoring, secure configuration, patching, and incident response.
  • Backup, restoration, regions, quotas, support, and ownership.
  • Tagging, allocation, budgets, alerts, and lifecycle policy.

Gates four and five: economics and pilot

Compare retain, retire, replace, rehost, replatform, and redesign. Include transition, parallel run, support, security, network, backup, people, commitment, and exit costs. Pilot representative users, information, integrations, load, security, failure, recovery, accessibility, and support.

Gate six: cutover and rollback

Approve preconditions, freeze, synchronization, acceptance transactions, communications, monitoring, go or no-go authority, rollback threshold, reversal, and stabilization. Reconcile assets and residual information after cutover, then obtain business-owner acceptance.

Next step for your environment

Apply all six gates to the first migration wave and stop scheduling if any owner, dependency, test, or rollback evidence is missing.

Record the accountable owner, baseline, source date, decision, exceptions, acceptance evidence, and review trigger. Test consequential changes in a bounded environment, maintain a rollback path, and verify the real result before closing the work. Product names, availability, pricing, legal requirements, and security guidance can change; recheck the primary sources whenever the decision is renewed or the environment changes.
