Cloud computing can change how a business accesses, scales, and operates technology, but it does not automatically improve productivity. The result depends on workflow design, service ownership, user adoption, reliability, security, support, economics, and exit.

NIST SP 800-145 defines essential cloud characteristics and service and deployment models. FinOps connects technology decisions with business value and accountability. These sources do not prove a workload-specific productivity gain.

Baseline the business workflow

Name users, transactions, handoffs, applications, information, volume, peak periods, current completion time, failure, rework, support demand, accessibility needs, and owner. Define the target outcome without assuming cloud adoption is the cause.

Match the cloud service to the need

Compare retention, retirement, SaaS replacement, rehosting, replatforming, and redesign. Evaluate service and deployment models, responsibility boundaries, integration, data location, latency, availability, recovery, support, skill, supplier concentration, and portability.

Prepare the operating foundation

  • Identity, least privilege, emergency access, and ownership.
  • Information governance, encryption, keys, sharing, retention, and exports.
  • Logging, monitoring, secure configuration, patching, backup, and restoration.
  • Tags, budgets, alerts, quotas, cost allocation, and provider escalation.
  • User support, accessibility, training, documentation, and change acceptance.

Verify productivity and economics

Pilot representative work, integrations, data, load, failure, security, support, and restoration. Compare completion time, accuracy, rework, user experience, reliability, risk, support effort, and full cost with the baseline. Test exports and exit instead of treating adoption as value.
