Figuring out which laptop would best suit your needs can be tedious work
There are plenty of laptop brands and models to choose. While you can find a decent laptop in the brick and mortar storefronts, you limit your choices and sometimes pay more versus what you find online. So how do you know which one to buy, when you can’t physically inspect online options?
Let’s start by identifying your underlying preferences
Is portability more important than screen size?
Screen size plays a significant role in how portable a laptop may be for the average user. Screens with 15.6″ or more are usually thicker and out-weigh their 12.5″ and 14″ counterparts. Here’s an example of two popular Lenovo models that dramatically differ in weight and portability.
The Lenovo Carbon X1 comes with a 14″ screen and is made specifically to be lightweight and has a thin profile. If you’re looking for portability without the small 12.5″ screen, this is by far our favorite choice. We recently purchased this laptop for a client, and we were pleasantly surprised by how light this unit feels.
Here are three Carbon X1 builds found on Amazon that we feel are suitable configurations. They are listed from least to highest in price and processing speed and power.

Now let’s talk about the Lenovo p51, it’s fast with a very long battery life (~10 hours) and comes with a numeric keypad. However, this laptop is clunkier than the Carbon X1. It does weigh two pounds more than the Carbon but still fits in your notebook bag and depending on your tolerance to weight, the powerful processor, longevity of the battery and numeric keypad this laptop includes makes it our top choice for a mobile workstation.
Prices for the Lenovo P51 vary depending on the amount of memory, processor type and hard drive space and interface. To break them down, we’ve listed our three preferred configurations found on Amazon.

Do you need a laptop that is your full-time workstation?
While we find that Dell sometimes takes way too long to get pre-configured units out the door, if you need a laptop that will serve as your full-time workstation, with the ability to use multiple monitors, then the Dell Precision is our favorite choice.
There are various Precision models to choose from, depending on your budget and processing power needs. The model in the middle of price and power that we would recommend is the 7520 model.
You can buy the Dell Precision pre-configured from Amazon to help expedite the ordering process. Dell can take up to 2 weeks before boxing and ship your laptop, while Amazon can ship the same day.
